چکیده

We shall show that the density of defects produced at a secondorder phase transition is determined by the correlation length of the fields. This is true both for defects appearing in the Ginzburg regime and for defects produced at a quench, when the Ginzburg regime is irrelevant.

The Dynamics Of Vortex And Monopole Production By Quench Induced Phase Separation

Our understanding of the mechanism by which topological defects are formed in symmetry breaking phase transitions has recently changed. We examine the non-equilibrium dynamics of defect formation for weakly-coupled global O(N) theories possessing vortices (strings) and monopoles. It is seen that, as domains form and grow, defects are swept along on their boundaries at a density of about one def...

Conical thin shell wormhole from global monopole: A theoretical construction

By applying ’Darmois-Israel formalism’, we establish a new class of thin shell wormhole in the context of global monopole resulting from the breaking of a global O(3) symmetry. Since global monopole is asymptotically conical ( no longer asymptotically flat ), we call it as conical thin shell wormhole. Different characteristics of this conical thin shell wormhole, namely, time evolution of the t...

Emergent magnetic monopoles in frustrated magnetic systems.

This Theme Issue reports papers presented at a Discussion Meeting intended to bring together theorists and experimentalists working on magnetic charge carriers, or monopoles, in both natural and artificially nanostructured spin ice lattices, and to explore related topics on Berry phase physics and domain wall motion and a possible solid-state/cosmology interface in these systems. The Discussion...

SUPERFLUID He: A LABORATORY MODEL SYSTEM FOR QUANTUM FIELD THEORY∗

The early Universe is believed to have undergone a sequence of rapid phase transitions. Defect formation in these transitions has been suggested as one possible source for the anisotropy in the cosmic background radiation and the large-scale structure in the distribution of visible mass. So far controlled laboratory experiments have not been performed on homogeneous second order phase transitio...

1 Defect zoo Many interesting developments in cosmology over the last 20 years have come from the realization, due to Kirzhnits [1], that (almost) each spontaneous symmetry breaking in particle physics corresponds to a phase transition in the early universe. For a typical grand-unified theory, the early moments after the big bang are characterized by the full grand unified symmetry. The exact n...
